Sitta pusilla

A small 4 1/2 inch bird that is native to South-Eastern Virginia, including Richmond and surrounding areas.

Males have a gray back with a creamy white chin, breast and belly and a brown cap, eye line and tail. They have a light grey spot at the nape of the neck.

Females are the same as males.

Juveniles are the same adults.

Brown-headed Nuthatches eat insects, seeds and some suet. They are a tiny little bird also seen “upside-down” while eating or climbing a tree, usually pine trees. Typically you hear their high pitch sound before you see them.
