Haemorhous mexicanus

A very common 5 inch ground bird that is native to Virginia all year.

Males are reddish in the face, breast and rump with brown markings behind the eyes and a white belly with brown streaks. Their brown wings have white streaks and they have a short curved bill.

Females are brown with white streaks on chest. They have no red.

Juveniles are the same as females.

House Finches eat, seeds, fruit and leaf buds. They like nyjer seeds and
often visit feeder with Goldfinches. They travel in flocks and can be very social.
