Melanerpes erythrocephalus

A fairly common, 9 inch bird, native to Virginia all year round.

Males have black back with white stripes on the wings and a snow white breast, belly and rump. Their head it totally red.

Females are the same as males.

Juveniles are the same as adults except duller back and no red on head.

Red-headed Woodpeckers eat insects, nuts, fruit suet and occasionally seeds. They prefer dead trees and store nuts in the cavity of a tree and cover the nuts with bark. They can catch bugs in the air.
