Bird Watchers RVA Store Birding Trips Birds Nature Wild Bird Feeding

Squirrel Proof Bird Feeding

How many times have you filled your wild bird feeders, then sat back to enjoy all the beautiful birds coming to visit, but instead you to watch in horror, as a squirrel climbs right up? The squirrel devours ALL your wild bird food in a matter of minutes, before the birds and you ever had a chance to enjoy it! So, what do you do? You try to “outsmart” the critters and it may work for a while, but eventually they outsmart you! The squirrels won, so you give up and stop wasting money on wild bird food that the birds never get to eat!

Bird Watchers RVA is hear to tell you, DON’T GIVE UP! There are several ways to feed your wild birds without squirrels or other critters stealing food from you! There truly are Squirrel-Proof, Wild Bird Feeders and Systems on the market.

The most popular, are feeders that close up, such as the Squirrel Buster line. Squirrel Buster feeders by Brome, automatically shut when the squirrel places weight on the feeder, and cover up the food ports. To keep squirrels from getting onto your bird feeder, the bottom of feeder should be five feet up from the ground, hanging on a pole with a 3′ radius, (free of trees, birdbaths and shrubs) around the pole. Now, if they jump, climb on, or place their weight on the feeder, BAM! They have no access to the wild bird food. I must admit, it can be fun watching all the creative ways they try to “beat the system”. They are definitely persistent creatures!

Another way to outwit these furry bird “wannabes” is to set up a pole system with a baffle. This keeps squirrels from climbing up the pole to access the feeders at all. Again, place your pole-mounted feeders 8-10′ away from railings, roofs or trees. Squirrel baffles (top of baffle) should be a minimum of 5′ from the ground. We also sell Raccoon baffles! Have you ever woken up in the morning to find your suet feeders, or even your entire bird feeders, completely missing? The culprit is most likely a raccoon, or maybe even a bear. Once you have a baffle correctly in place, you can hang a variety of different types of feeders, all on one pole system without worry of thieves robbing you blind. With a pole system and a baffle, you can hang seed tube feeders, suet feeders, mealworm feeders, peanuts feeders, and the list goes on, since the little buggers can’t get to them at all!
