Carduelis tristis
A very common, 5 inch bird, native to Virginia all year round.
Males are bright yellow with a black patch on the forehead and back tail with white rump. They have black wings with white wing bars.
Females are dull olive yellow with brown wings and a white rump.
Juveniles are the same the female.
American Goldfinches eat insects, and a few seeds. They really love nyjer! During the winter, males look more like females. They are the only finch that completely molts twice a year.
