Zenaida macroura
A common 12 inch ground bird that is native to Virginia all year.
Males are a blend of brown and grey with iridescent pink and green around the neck. They have a block spot under the eye and black spots on the wings and tail.
Females are similar but lack the iridescent pink and green neck.
Juveniles are the same as females but more spotted and streaked.
Mourning Doves eat seeds. They will occasionally visit feeders but prefer seeds on the ground. Their head is seen bobbing as they walk. Pairs tend to mate for life.
